The new seven-week course on "How to be a great English teacher” started on October 24, 2009. This course was originally thought to be held in two different locations, with several groups of teachers of various backgrounds and teaching experience.
- The first group meets at GoodWin language school on Saturday mornings and has seven new, enthusiastic, and actively learning teachers. The lessons have been challenging and exciting, and I believe that the teachers are learning quite a bit on teaching methods (because they are forced to do a mini-lesson on a particular topic within a short period of time), on the quality traits that a fine teacher must have, and on the use of language itself, through Reading and Listening exercises. We are also watching The Emperor’s Club, an encouraging movie about a History teacher who is trying not only to teach, but also mold his students.
- The second group meets at Crimean Industrial-Pedagogical University. The age is diverse, anywhere between 25 and 60. The first meeting took place on November 28, and the teachers enjoyed all the learning they could receive. Unfortunately, the swine flu epidemic forced us to call off the classes with this group, and they may only be resumed online in January 2010.
- The third group was planning to meet on November 2, but never did meet because of the epidemic. However, the desire of English language instructors teaching not English majors to brush up on their language skills is quite admirable and commendable, and we hope for more cooperation in the future.
This swine flu epidemic convinced me again that online training does not only save money and time, but it protects your health and makes learning always accessible. Thus, it is now ETO’s major goal to transfer the classes into the online mode.
